Seasonal Work
The agriculture and horticulture sectors have many jobs available ideally suited for the seasonal worker or backpacker. Seasonal work often requires no previous experience and you will be provided with on-the-job training. The majority of seasonal work on orchards is paid per bin picked or tree pruned, meaning fast efficient workers make more money. Packing and sorting work is paid on an hourly rate.
Agriculture
Jobs can include seasonal and permanent work in roles including:
  • farm or herd management
  • farm hand
  • relief milking (seasonal)
  • sheep shearing and shearing shed hand (seasonal).

The work hours can also be seasonal. Work in dairy farming typically involves working 50 to 58 hours a week, though this varies throughout the year.

Horticulture
Thousands of extra workers are needed during the harvest season to pick and package fruit, flowers and vegetables, and there is often a shortage of workers during harvest times.

These opportunities include:
  • fruit tree pruning and thinning
  • fruit and vegetable picking/harvesting
  • tractor, truck or forklift operating at harvest time
  • packing and sorting fruit and vegetables
  • planting vegetables.
